Rising sea levels is a colossal problem that is derived from many causes, and will affect many areas and peoples. Rising sea levels refers to the fact that the rise of the ocean has doubled in the last 20 years compared to the previous 80 years and is continuing to increase. Recent satellite data show that global sea level is rising, with the global average rise over the last two decades rising about 3.2 mm per year (0.12 inches). If the sea levels rise enough, low lying islands and land could be completely submerged. Also, if the sea levels rise by just half a meter, the city of Los Angeles could see financial losses of $410 million. A recent study says we can expect the oceans to rise between 2.5 and 6.5 feet by 2100, enough to flood a startling 1400 U.S. cities. A very extreme estimate would include a total meltdown of the Greenland ice sheet, and could push the rise to 23 feet (7 meters), enough to completely submerge London and Los Angeles.
