Causes + Evidence

The acceleration of sea level rise is mostly being caused by melting ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica. Many glaciers in Alaska and other parts of the United States have shrunk dramatically, as well. The other main reason for rising sea levels is thermal expansion.

Large ice formations, like glaciers and the ice caps, naturally melt a bit each summer. But in the winter, snow generally balances back out the melting.  However, recently, higher temperatures have led to more summer melting than before as well as less snowfall. This results in the rising on sea levels. Thermal expansion is ‘the tendency of water to change in volume in response to a change in temperature’. When the water expands, it raises the sea level.

Finally, at the end of the ladder, melting ice and thermal expansion are caused by climate change. Climate change generally refers to the overall temperature of the earth rising. Climate change is mostly caused by CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere when humans burn fossil fuels. CO2 or other greenhouse gases create a barrier that reflects and holds in heat in the atmosphere. This heat then goes back down to Earth, when it should be emitted back out of the atmosphere had the gases not been present. Human alter the temperature of the Earth by adjusting how reflective the Earth is by building farms, cities, and forests.

There is lots of evidence that rising sea levels and climate change is happening and will increase over the years. The overall level of the ocean has risen about 8 inches since 1901. Earth’s average air temperature has also increased by about 1.4 °F since 1900, with most of this increase taking place since the 1970s. Another indicator of climate change is the shrinking sea ice. The amount of summer ice in the Arctic Ocean recently has been at an all time low since the 1960s. Glaciers have been melting over the past 50 years, and the rate is only speeding up. Climate change is also affecting wildlife. As temperatures get warmer, many plants are starting to grow and bloom earlier in the spring time. Also, some animals are waking from hibernation sooner or migrating at different times. All this evidence of the problem is discouraging, however if people work together, then perhaps climate change will end.
